By default, the backlight turns on when you press the hardware buttons and turns off when you're not using them. You can set the hardware button backlight to be always on in Settings.

Go to Settings, and then tap Display, gestures & buttons.
- Tap Navigation button backlight.
- Select the Always on when screen is on option.
