What you can do on Google Photos

Note: The help content here is based on the following app version: 5.23.x.
In the Google Photos app, sign in to your Google Account to access your backed up photos and videos. Here are some of the things you can do when using Google Photos.
  • View, edit, and share your photos and videos.
  • Select photos and videos for sharing, archiving, and more. To select multiple photos and videos, do any of the following:
    • Press and hold a date to select all photos and videos captured on that date.
    • Press and hold a thumbnail to select it, and then tap more thumbnails.
  • Create albums, collages, animations, and movies.
  • Search for people, pets, things, or places in your photos.
Tip: To learn more about Google Photos, tap your profile photo on the top-right corner of the screen, and then tap Help & feedback. Or, you can visit support.google.com/photos.

Cropping a photo

  1. Open the Google Photos app.
  2. Tap a photo thumbnail to view it full screen.
  3. Tap Edit photo button > Crop, and then do any of the following:
    • Tap Auto to automatically straighten the photo. You can also gradually straighten the photo by dragging the slider.
    • Tap Aspect ratio button, and then choose an aspect ratio to use for cropping the photo.
    • Tap to rotate the photo 90 degrees.
    • Crop the photo by dragging one of the corners of the crop box.
    • Tap Transform button to adjust the perspective of the photo. This is best for straightening and cropping documents.

      To select the boundary of the document, tap Auto or manually drag the borders.

  4. While you're editing, press and hold the photo to compare your changes to the original.
  5. Tap Reset if you need to start over. When you've finished cropping, tap Done.
  6. Do one of the following:
    • Tap Cancel to undo the edits and start over.
    • Tap Save copy to save the changes as a new photo.

Trimming a video

  1. Open the Google Photos app.
  2. Tap a video thumbnail to view it in full screen.
  3. Tap Edit photo button, and then drag the trim sliders to the part where you want the video to begin and end.
    Tip: You can also stabilize or rotate the video, as well as mute the audio.
  4. Tap Play video button to preview your trimmed video.
  5. Tap Save copy.
The trimmed video is saved as a copy. The original video remains unedited.

Changing the playback speed of a slow motion video

Adjust the playback speed of a selected section of a slow motion video.
Important: You can only change the playback speed of videos captured at 4x in the Camera app.
  1. Open the Google Photos app.
  2. Find and tap the thumbnail of slow motion video to view it in full screen.

    Slow motion videos are marked with the icon on the thumbnail.

  3. Tap the screen to see the onscreen controls.
  4. Frame the sequence you want to slow down by moving the left and right sliders.

Saving shots from your motion photo

After you've captured a motion photo, you'll see recommended shots marked with a dot. Choose which ones you want to save.
  1. Open the Google Photos app.
  2. Find and tap the motion photo.
  3. Tap Motion Photo Play button to play it. Tap Motion Photo Pause button to pause.
  4. Swipe up on the photo.
  5. From Shots in this photo, tap the thumbnail strip.
  6. Tap a thumbnail marked with a dot to see a recommended shot. You can also drag to scroll frame by frame.
  7. When you see the shot you want to save, tap Save copy.
  8. Repeat the above step to choose and save more shots from your motion photo.
