Recording video with Sonic Zoom

By default, the Camera app is set to record videos in 3D Audio with Sonic Zoom. This increases the volume from your subject to make the audio sound louder and clearer.

Sonic Zoom has Audio Boost. Turning this feature on will boost the volume from your subject to the maximum level.

Important: Sonic Zoom Sonic Zoom icon is only available in Video capture mode.
  1. On the Home screen, tap the camera icon to open the Camera app.
  2. Switch to Video mode. See Choosing a capture mode for details.
  3. Next to the recording button, tap the Audio Boost icon to turn it on or off.

  4. When ready, tap Video record button to start recording. Make sure not to cover the microphones when holding your phone.
  5. Do one of the following:
    • If Audio Boost is off, zoom in to magnify your subject and manually increase the volume. See Zooming.

      The green mic level at the center indicates how amplified your subject's audio becomes as you zoom.

    • If Audio Boost is on, you're recording the subject you're facing at the maximum volume. You can still zoom in on your subject for a closer view.
  6. Tap Pause recording button to pause the recording, and then tap Resume recording button to resume.
  7. To stop recording, tap Stop recording button.
    Tip: Videos recorded in 3D Audio are marked with 3D audio button in Google Photos. Use earphones when playing back the video to enjoy immersive sound.
