Navigating HTC 5G Hub‍ with TalkBack

Use TalkBack if you need to navigate HTC 5G Hub‍ by spoken feedback. When you touch the screen, HTC 5G Hub‍ gives you an audible response so you know what you are touching.
Note: Not all languages are supported.

Turning TalkBack on

  1. Go to Settings, and then tap Accessibility.
  2. Tap TalkBack, and then tap the On/Off switch.
  3. Read the items and features on your device that TalkBack will have access to, and then tap OK.
  4. Listen through the tutorial explaining how to use TalkBack.

Turning Explore by touch on or off

Explore by touch allows HTC 5G Hub‍ to respond to TalkBack gestures and screen touches with audible feedback. Explore by touch is enabled when you turn on TalkBack.
Important: The steps below are described using the regular gestures. Use the corresponding TalkBack gestures if you already have TalkBack turned on.

Follow these steps if you want to turn off Explore by touch:

  1. Go to Settings, and then tap Accessibility.
  2. Tap TalkBack, and then tap Settings.
  3. Under Navigation, tap the On/Off switch next to Explore by touch, and then tap OK.

When Explore by touch is disabled, HTC 5G Hub‍ will no longer respond to TalkBack gestures or speak screen touches.

Using TalkBack gestures

When TalkBack and Explore by touch are turned on, the regular touch gestures are replaced by the TalkBack gestures.
Note: Media gestures such as 3-finger swiping may not be available when TalkBack gestures are enabled.
Do one of the following:
To Do this
Open an item
  1. Drag your finger on the screen to find and select the item.
  2. Double-tap anywhere on the screen to open the item.
Move an item
  1. Drag your finger on the screen to find the item.
  2. Double-tap anywhere on the screen, but don't lift your finger on the second tap.
  3. Drag the item to a new spot and then lift your finger.
Scroll through a screen Use two fingers to swipe up, down, left or right.
Unlock the lock screen Use two fingers to swipe up from the bottom of the screen.
Open the Notifications panel Use two fingers to swipe down from the top of the screen.

Assigning TalkBack shortcuts

TalkBack has customizable gestures that can be used to open the Notifications panel, view recent apps, access TalkBack controls, and more.
Important: The steps below are described using the regular gestures. Use the corresponding TalkBack gestures if you already have TalkBack turned on.
  1. Go to Settings, and then tap Accessibility.
  2. Tap TalkBack, and then tap Settings > Gestures.
  3. Tap any of the shortcut gestures, and then select an action.

Using TalkBack context menus

TalkBack has a global context menu for controlling continuous reading and TalkBack controls and a local context menu for controlling the selected text or item on the screen. These menus can be accessed using TalkBack shortcut gestures.
  1. Go to Settings, and then tap Accessibility.
  2. Tap TalkBack, and then turn it on.
  3. Do one of the following:
    • To open the global context menu, use one finger to swipe down and right in one continuous movement.
    • To open the local context menu, use one finger to swipe up and right in one continuous movement.
    Note: If you already changed the TalkBack shortcut gestures, check your TalkBack settings for the appropriate gesture.
  4. Double-tap an item on the menu to select.

Changing the TalkBack reading speed and pitch

Important: The steps below are described using the regular gestures. Use the corresponding TalkBack gestures if you already have TalkBack turned on.
  1. Go to Settings, and then tap Accessibility.
  2. Tap TalkBack, and then tap Settings > Text-to-speech settings.
  3. Drag the Speech rate or Pitch sliders to the right to increase or left to decrease.
  4. Tap Play to hear the speech rate and pitch you've set.
    Note: Tap Reset to revert the settings to their default values.

TalkBack language settings

  1. Go to Settings, and then tap Accessibility.
  2. Tap TalkBack, and then tap Settings > Text-to-speech settings.
  3. Do any of the following:
    To Do this
    Select a different language Tap Language, and then select your preferred language on the list.
    Install a voice Tap Settings icon next to Preferred engine, and then tap Install voice data. Tap the language you want to install, and then tap Download icon. When installation is completed, press to go back to the Text-to-speech settings screen and tap Language.
    Note: Not all languages are supported.
