Some photos and videos are not backed up. What should I do to back them up from my phone?

Try the tips below to check why Google Photos may not be backing up some of your photos and videos and what to do.

Check your backup settings

Make sure your backup settings are properly set.
  1. Open the Google Photos app.
  2. Tap your profile photo on the top-right corner of the screen.
  3. Tap Photos settings > Backup. Make sure the Backup switch is turned on.
  4. Check the following settings:
    Option Description
Account & storage If you added several accounts, make sure the backup account selected is the same one as what you're viewing in the Google Photos app.
Backup quality Choose between Original quality and Storage saver.
Mobile data usage Choose whether to allow backups over mobile data connection. If you turn off Back up videos over data and Back up while roaming, Google Photos will perform backups via Wi‍-Fi.
Back up device folders For details, see Check if you need to back up device folders.

Check the file size

Make sure your photos and videos meet the required file size.
  • Photos can't be more than 200 MB, and can't be more than 200 megapixels.
  • Video can't be more than 10 GB.

Check if you need to back up device folders

If you downloaded photos or videos from other apps—such as chat or social media apps—you can select them for backup. You can also back up media folders you created in internal storage or your SD card.
  1. Open the Google Photos app.
  2. Tap your profile photo on the top-right corner of the screen.
  3. Tap Photos settings > Backup.
  4. Tap Back up device folders.
  5. Turn on the switch next to each folder you want to back up.

Check backup status

Google Photos backs up automatically over your Wi‍-Fi or mobile data connection. It may take some time to finish the backup, depending on the number and size of your photos and videos. Check the backup status to see the upload progress.
Here's how to check:
  1. Open the Google Photos app.
  2. Tap your profile photo on the top-right corner of the screen. You may see one of the following statuses:
    • Preparing backup, Getting ready to back up, or Backing up: Google Photos is about to start the backup, or upload is in progress.
    • Backup is off: Backup is off. Make sure to turn this on in the Google Photos app.
    • Waiting for connection: You've set the app to back up through mobile data connection. Check and make sure your data connection is on.
    • Waiting for Wi-Fi: You've set the app to back up through Wi‍-Fi. Check and make sure your phone is connected to a Wi‍-Fi network.
    • Backup complete: Upload is complete.

Check your uploaded photos and videos in the Google Photos website

To check whether your photos and videos have all been uploaded, use your computer web browser to access the Google Photos website, photos.google.com, and sign in to your Google Account.
