HTC’s Near-Term and Net-Zero Science Based Target Approved by SBTi

HTC’s Near-Term and Net-Zero Science Based Target Approved by SBTi

At HTC, we are committed to pushing the boundaries of technology while keeping our planet healthy. As a global leader in Extended Reality (XR) products and smartphones, we’re excited to share some big news: the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has officially approved both our near-term and net-zero science-based emissions reduction targets. This is a significant step in our journey toward achieving the 1.5°C goal set by the Paris Agreement.

Achieving alignment with the 1.5°C target is a rigorous undertaking, and only a select few companies worldwide have met the criteria set forth by the SBTi. As a globally recognized authority in climate action, the SBTi has commended HTC for setting the most ambitious net-zero target currently available through their process. This endorsement is a testament to HTC’s leadership in ESG, highlighting our commitment to meeting international sustainability standards as a frontrunner in the global movement towards a low-carbon future.

HTC has set ambitious targets to cut down on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across our entire operation: by 2030, we’re aiming to slash our scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 42% compared to our 2021 levels. We’re also focusing on our broader impact by targeting a 25% reduction in scope 3 GHG emissions within the same timeframe. Ultimately, our goal is to achieve net-zero emissions across our entire value chain by 2050.

To make this happen, we’ve outlined both near-term and long-term targets:

Overall Net-Zero Target: Commits to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain by 2050.

Near-Term Targets: Commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 42% by 2030 from a 2021 base year, also commits to reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions 25% within the same timeframe.

Long-Term Targets: Commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 90% by 2050 from a 2021 base year, also commits to reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions 90% within the same timeframe.

We’re already hard at work implementing six key strategies to manage and adapt to climate change, including:

Carbon Management and Policies

Low-Carbon Operations

Low-Carbon Products

Low-Carbon Transportation

Value Chain Engagement

Carbon Offsets

In early 2024, we took things a step further by expanding our Greenhouse Gas Emission inventory to include all our subsidiaries. We also kicked off a low-carbon process and supply chain transformation plan and optimized our energy management practices to keep reducing our carbon footprint. Plus, we released a third-party verified carbon footprint report for our latest XR headset, the VIVE XR Elite, which exhibits total lifecycle emissions of 92.64 kgCO2e.

At HTC, setting science-based targets is just the beginning. We’re committed to not only reducing our own impact but also driving positive change across the industry. As we move forward, we’ll keep exploring new ways to minimize our environmental footprint and stay on track to hit our net-zero goal by 2050.
