HTC Corporation, a global leader in virtual reality platforms and ecosystems as well as smartphones, continuously strives to enhance human life through innovative technology. Today, HTC announced its latest achievements in Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG) practices in the second half of 2024, highlighting the crucial role of technology in realizing low-carbon transformation and sustainable value.
In the first half of 2024, HTC put in place six key carbon reduction strategies on its pathway to net-zero by 2050, including “Carbon Management and Policies,” “Low-Carbon Operations,” “Low-Carbon Products,” “Low-Carbon Transportation,” “Value Chain Collaboration,” and “Carbon Offsetting.” HTC expanded its scope of greenhouse gas inventory and verification to include parent and subsidiary companies, and earned a spot on the CDP Supplier Engagement Leaderboard (A grade) thanks to its excellent performance. Additionally, the company strengthened its ESG evaluation indicators, qualifying it for the FTSE4Good Index Series and earning a Silver Medal rating from EcoVadis (both for the third year in a row), which places it in the top 15% of companies globally. These achievements laid a solid foundation for continued breakthroughs in the second half of the year.
In the second half of 2024, HTC became the fifth Taiwanese high-tech hardware equipment company to pass the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) verification and receive approval for its net-zero target. This international recognition illustrates that HTC is not only a leader in product innovation, but also in applying technology to ESG initiatives. In this way, HTC guides industries toward a sustainable future through science-based carbon reduction programs.
In addition, HTC continues to invest in renewable energy and smart management solutions. Its solar power system at Taoyuan has transitioned from selling electricity to the Taipower Company to operating as a self-generating, self-consumption energy model. As of December 2024, the system had accrued 78 National Renewable Energy Certificates (T-RECs), helping support HTC’s goal of achieving low-carbon operations. Additionally, in April 2024, HTC inaugurated a new 200kW solar power generation system at its Taipei headquarters. With an estimated annual generation capacity of 239 MWh, the system passed field inspection certification by the National Renewable Energy Certificate Center (T-REC) in December 2024 and has officially started accumulating T-RECs.
In terms of product design, HTC used Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) tools to complete a carbon footprint report for its XR headset, VIVE XR Elite. The report shows its total lifecycle carbon emissions at just 92.64 kgCO2e, showcasing the value of technology in achieving low-carbon products and environmental protection.
In 2024, HTC achieved impressive results in the ESG field, winning the "National Sustainable Development Award" for the second year in a row – the only company with consecutive wins in both 2023 and 2024. HTC was also included in the Taiwan Corporate Sustainability Award (TCSA) with "Taiwan’s Top 100 Sustainable Companies Award" for the first time. Additionally, HTC received the "Corporate Sustainability Report Awards – Telecommunications Industry – Platinum Award" for the second consecutive year and, for the first time, the "Sustainability Performance Award – Climate Leadership Award," highlighting its commitment to environmental and social responsibility.
HTC is committed to promoting a low-carbon value chain and creating a broader ecosystem that supports carbon reduction. As part of this effort, HTC launched its Supply Chain Collaboration and “Supply Chain Carbon Management Platform” programs to support suppliers in building their carbon inventory capabilities and set reduction actions and targets.
Additionally, HTC leverages XR technology and its VIVERSE platform for smart education, digital sustainable culture, and virtual office models, providing low-carbon solutions for businesses and society, and including the many possibilities of this technology into its vision of sustainable development.
In the future, HTC will continue to focus on innovation with the goals of achieving low-carbon transformation and a sustainable value chain. Through partnerships, HTC aims to push the boundaries of sustainable development. HTC firmly believes that the power of technology lies not only in driving future innovation, but also in creating a greener, healthier planet for the next generation.
