How do I get my computer to recognize my phone?

Depending on the phone model, do one of the following:

  • In HTC phones that were updated to Android 9, HTC Desire 12, HTC Desire 12+, HTC U12+, and later phone models:
    1. Make sure your computer is connected to the Internet before you connect the phone to your computer. The appropriate device driver for your phone will be downloaded and installed automatically.
    2. After the driver is successfully installed, use software such as File Explorer to copy files between your computer and phone.
  • If you're using HTC U11 or HTC U11‍+ with Android 8, HTC U11 EYEs or earlier phone models:

You can still use HTC Sync Manager. You may need to configure some settings on your phone and computer for it to recognize your phone.

In some cases, the computer and HTC Sync Manager may not be able to recognize the phone right away after it is connected. If this happens, try out the tips below.

Install the latest HTC Sync Manager version

In HTC Sync Manager, click > Check for updates. If a new version is available, download and install the update.

Enable app permissions

If your phone is running on Android 6 Marshmallow or later, connect your phone to your computer, and then open the Notifications panel on your phone. Tap the first HTC Sync Manager notification, and then tap Allow each time you're prompted to grant HTC Sync Manager access to your data.

Check the cable connection

  • Try connecting to different USB ports. Make sure you connect your phone to a USB 2.0 or faster port on your computer.
  • Try a different USB cable. Make sure to use an HTC-branded cable.
  • Try connecting your phone to another computer that has the latest HTC Sync Manager version installed.

Check if my phone is mounted as media storage

  1. Connect your phone to your computer.
  2. In Android 6 Marshmallow or later, tap Yes when you're prompted to allow USB file transfers on your phone.

Or, open the Notification panel, tap the Use USB for notification, and then tap File transfers or Transfer files.

If your phone is successfully mounted as media storage, you'll see the name of your phone under the Computer window of your PC. The phone name will also be listed in the Control Panel > Device Manager.

Run HTC Sync Manager as an administrator

Open HTC Sync Manager as an administrator, or make sure you're logged in on your computer as an administrator.

  1. Right-click the HTC Sync Manager shortcut, and then click Run as administrator.

If prompted by User Account Control, then click Yes to apply permission to allow the program to run with full permission as an administrator.

Note: If you're doing this while logged in as a standard user instead of an administrator, then you will need to provide the administrator's password before the software will run as administrator.
  2. Connect your phone again to your computer and check if HTC Sync Manager recognizes your phone.

Uninstall and reinstall HTC Sync Manager

  1. Disconnect your phone from your computer.
  2. If you're using a Windows computer, open the All Programs menu and find the HTC folder.
  3. Uninstall both HTC Sync Manager and HTC Driver.
  4. Reinstall HTC Sync Manager. Download the software from the HTC support site: htc‍.‍com‍/‍hsm‍/.

Check for the latest version and install the update.

  5. Connect your phone to your computer again.
  6. Check if HTC Sync Manager can now detect your phone.
