I'm unable to send/receive SMS text messages properly

You may be experiencing any of these issues:

You keep receiving multiple copies of the same SMS message.
You are able to receive SMS messages, but cannot send.
Outgoing text messages are stuck in pending.

Many SMS issues are network-related. Contact your carrier for advice on possible network issues.

In rare circumstances, SMS messages can become stuck in a pending state and are unable to be sent. This can be resolved by a system update.

Ensure the phone is fully updated. Follow these steps:

Go to Settings > About > Software updates. The exact path may differ depending on your phone.
These are the three typical paths:
- Settings > About > Software updates
- Settings > System updates > HTC software update
- Settings > AT&T Software Update
Tap Check now to check for updates.
- If an update is available, follow the onscreen instructions.
- If no update is found, confirm the phone is on the latest software version. Go to Settings > About > Software information.

Third-party messaging apps may also cause multiple duplicate SMS messages to be received. Clearing the data cache may resolve the issue. See How to wipe your cache partition.

A factory data reset can also resolve some software issues.

Note: Factory Reset Protection may be enabled. Before taking the following steps, ensure you have the login information of the main Google account that is logged into the phone or you will be unable to use the phone.

Go to Settings, and then tap Backup & reset.
Tap Factory data reset or Reset phone.
Tap Reset phone or OK.
