I keep getting a ¡§smith ¡V disabled¡¨ notification on my phone

You may be receiving the notification "Smith - Disabled. Click here to open".

“Smith” is a tool used for error reporting to HTC.

A fix has been released in a software update. Ensure the phone is fully updated, by following these steps:

  1. Navigate to Settings > System Updates. The exact path will differ depending on your phone.
These are the three typical paths:

Settings > System updates > HTC software update
    Settings > Software update
    Settings > AT&T Software Update

  2. Select HTC Software Update to check for new updates.
If an update is available, follow the on-screen prompts to download and install the update.
If no update is found, confirm the device is on the latest software version by navigating to Settings > About > Software Information.

If the phone's software is up to date or no updates are available, follow these steps to clear the logging tool's defaults:

  1. Open the Smith Logging Tool, either by tapping on the “Click here to open” in the notification or via the Phone Dialer by dialing *#*#SMITH#*#* (*#*#76484#*#*).
  2. Turn off any of the three logging tools that may be on.
  3. Navigate to Settings > Power and turn off Fast boot.
  4. Press and hold POWER until the Phone Options appear.
  5. Select Power Off and wait for the phone to fully turn off.
  6. Wait for a few moments, and then power the phone on by pressing and holding the POWER button.
  7. Wipe the cache partition. See How to wipe your cache partition.
  8. Navigate to Settings > Apps > All > Smith and tap Clear data, Force stop, then Clear defaults.
NOTE: The option Clear defaults may be greyed out.
  9. Tap the BACK key to return to the Apps > All list and tap QXDM2SD, then Clear data, Force stop, and Clear defaults.
  10. Restart your phone.
NOTE: Do not perform a factory data reset for this issue.
