How to prepare for Firmware Over The Air (FOTA)

Firmware-Over-The-Air (FOTA) are system updates broadcasted and released for phones across varying regions and sources. You will need to ensure you have:

  • An active connection to the carrier’s mobile network, required to “check in” on the FOTA server
  • A stable Wi-Fi connection, to download the large FOTA update without relying on the mobile network

NOTE: If you bought your phone through a network carrier, updates will be released by your network provider.

You should install FOTA updates as soon as they become available. Follow these steps to proceed with the FOTA:

  1. Use the carrier SIM that is intended for the phone.
Keep in mind that the data connection may need to be active for up to 30 minutes before the device can check in on the FOTA server.
  2. Flash the device using an RUU if available.
Some phones require you to update using HTC Sync Manager.
  3. Ensure the phone remains powered on throughout the entire download and update process.
The phone will reboot by itself once the update has been installed.

Release dates for software updates may vary according to phone, region, and carrier. To stay informed of software updates, check with your network provider for the next release date.

Alternatively, you can check for software updates manually, by following these steps:

  1. Navigate to Settings > System Updates. The exact path will differ depending on your phone.
    These are the typical paths:

Settings > System updates > HTC software update
    Settings > Software update
    Settings > AT&T Software Update
Settings > About > Software Update
  1. Select Check Now or HTC Software Update to check for new updates.
If an update is available, follow the on-screen prompts to download and install the update.
If no update is found, confirm the device is on the latest software version by navigating to Settings > About > Software Information.
