My phone's GPS isn't working properly

You may be experiencing any of these issues:

  1. Your phone cannot find a location using GPS.
  2. Your phone shows inaccurate location on the map when using GPS.

NOTE: This article has been optimized for HTC Sense 4.4 or higher. For older phones some of the procedures below may be different. Please consult phone-specific content to help with individual procedures.

Location issues are often caused by a weak GPS signal. Follow these steps to help improve your signal:

  1. Check the map while outside of a building or vehicle. Walls, vehicle roofs, tall buildings, mountains, and other obstructions can block line of sight to GPS satellites.
NOTE: A GPS signal is strongest under the clear sky. If you can’t see the sky, you'll have a weak GPS signal and your position on the map might not be correct.
  2. Navigate to Settings > Location > and make sure Location is ON.
  3. Navigate to Settings > Loction > Sources Mode and tap High Accuracy.
NOTE: GPS accuracy varies depending on the number of visible GPS satellites. Locating all visible satellites can take several minutes, with accuracy gradually increasing over time.

Your phone's location detection is most accurate when using a combination of GPS, Wi-Fi, and mobile networks. Follow these steps to ensure you are using a combination of location sources:

  1. Navigate to Settings > Location > and make sure Location is ON.
  2. Navigate to Settings > Loction > Sources Mode and tap High Accuracy.
  3. Connect to a Wi-Fi network and see if location accuracy improves.
NOTE: The phone needs a data connection (such as 3G), to retrieve location data. You must have a data connection active, whether via a Wi-Fi or a mobile network.

Airplane mode affects High accuracy mode, since it disables Wi-Fi and mobile networks. Navigate to Settings and make sure that Airplane mode is turned off.

Resetting your browser's location settings can also improve location performance. If you are using Google Chrome, follow these steps to reset Chrome's location settings.

  1. Locate the menu option at the upper right corner of the browser app.
  2. Navigate to Settings > Site settings > Location.
  3. Select www.google.com and tap CLEAR & RESET then confirm.
  4. Allow Google Maps access to device's location.
  5. Open the browser app.
  6. Go to maps.google.com.
  7. Tap ALLOW on the message that shows up.
  8. Test the map again for accuracy.
