Performing a Factory/Hard Reset more

You can return your phone to its original state, as it was when it left the factory. This is also called a hard reset. You might want to do this if you are giving your phone to a friend or relative and you want to remove all your data first, or if your phone has a persistent problem that is not solved by powering off the phone and then powering it on again.

A factory reset is a drastic measure. It permanently erases all your personal data and customized settings, and also removes any programs you have installed. Make sure that you have backed up the information and files you want to keep. For information about ways of backing up your phone, see the following topics:

Performing a factory reset via settings
The most convenient way to do a factory reset is via the phone settings.

  1. On the Home screen's Settings tab, tap Menu > All Settings > System > Clear Storage.
  2. Enter 1234.
  3. Tap YES to perform the reset, or tap NO to cancel the reset.

Performing a factory reset using phone buttons
If you cannot turn on your phone or access the phone settings, you can still perform a factory reset by using buttons on the phone.

  1. With your phone powered off, press and hold the VOLUME UP and VOLUME DOWN buttons.
  2. While holding the volume buttons, press the END/POWER button briefly and then release it.
  3. When you see a warning message on screen, release the VOLUME UP and VOLUME DOWN buttons.
  4. Press the VOLUME UP button to perform the reset, or press any other button to cancel the reset.
Performing a Soft Reset more
Perform a soft (normal) reset to clear all active program memory and shut down all active programs. This is useful when your phone is running slower than normal, or a program is not performing properly. If a soft reset is performed when programs are running, unsaved work is lost.
  1. Hold your phone securely, with the front facing down.
  2. With your thumb or finger, open the back cover by lifting up from the left side of the cover.
  3. The RESET button is located at the bottom left below the battery compartment and SIM card slot. Use a small object with an non-sharp, pointed tip such as a toothpick to press the RESET button.
  4. Your phone restarts and displays the Home screen.
To replace the back cover, secure the right side of the back cover first and then press the cover down into place.
Backing Up Your Phone Using Microsoft My Phone more
Microsoft® My Phone syncs information between your phone and a password protected website hosted by Microsoft. You can back up and restore your contacts, calendar appointments, photos, and other information. (You can sync contacts, calendar, and tasks with My Phone only if your phone does not have a sync partnership with an Exchange Server.)

You can also share your photos directly from your phone to popular social networking sites. If you lose your phone, you can even use the My Phone website to help you protect your data and find your phone again.

Setting up your My Phone account
Whether you are setting up a new account or synchronizing to an existing account, the first step is to set up My Phone on your phone.
  1. Tap Start > Microsoft My Phone.
  2. Follow the instructions in the wizard to set up your My Phone account. During setup:
    • Sign in using your Hotmail or Windows Live address and password.
    • Set the sync method to automatic or manual, depending on your preference.
    • Install a new version of the My Phone software if you are asked to do so.

Do I need a stylus with this phone? more
No, HTC HD2 does not require a stylus, but relies on a more intuitive touch screen technology, and has been optimized for fingers.  The soft reset button on the back of the phone under the battery cover can still be used, but be careful no to use an object that may puncture the thin plastic button when resetting.
