Some users might encounter a slow loading time when opening the text messages after installing the ICS update on their ThunderBolt. This issue is caused by having too any messages in a thread. Depending on the severity of the issue, there are several options that the user can use to rectify and prevent this issue.
If you have not wiped your cache partition, please proceed to Option 1. Otherwise, please proceed to Option 2.
Option 1: Wipe Cache Partition
Before booting into Recovery, ensure that fast boot has been turned off:
1. Tap Menu
2. Tap Settings
3. Tap Power
4. Uncheck the box for Fast boot
Once fast boot has been turned off, reboot into Recovery to wipe cache partition:
1. Power off the device
2. While holding down the Volume Down button
, press the Power
button. The device will boot into the bootloader which is a white screen with 3 Androids at the bottom screen.
3. Using the Volume Down button
, select RECOVERY
4. Press the Power button
to select the option. Device will reboot into a black screen with a red exclamation mark in a red triangle atop a device.
5. Press Volume Up and Power button
to get into the Recovery menu.
6. Using Volume Down button
, highlight the Wipe cache partition
: Be sure that Wipe cache partition
is highlighted. Do not choose Wipe data/factory reset as this will result in loss of data!
7. Press the Power button
to select the option
8. When the process, is complete, ensure that Reboot system now
option is highlighted.
9. Press the Power button
to select the option and reboot the device into the OS.
If this solution does not improve the loading time, please proceed to the next option.
Option 2: Clear long message threads
If user is able to open the Messages after letting it load, delete any message threads that are over 500 messages long. To do so,
1. Tap and hold on the message thread to be deleted
2. Tap Delete
3. Confirm deletion by tapping OK
If Option 2 does not work because the loading time is taking too long (more than 5 minutes), please proceed to option 3 to do a factory data reset.
Option 3: Factory Data Reset
The last option, if the first 2 solutions do not work, would be to do a hard reset on the device. This will clear out all data from the device. Please be sure to back up the device prior to performing a hard reset.
: Before proceeding, it would be advisable to remove the micro SD card from the device to prevent accidental format. If it is removed, remember to replace it after the hard reset process is complete.
To complete a hard reset,
1. Tap Menu
2. Tap Settings
3. Tap Storage
4. Tap Factory data reset
5. Tap Reset phone
6. Tap Erase everything
to confirm and proceed with the hard reset.
To prevent this issue from happening in the future, please keep the number of messages in a thread under 500 when using the Messages application. The Messages app has a built-in feature that automatically delete older messages. If you would like to use this feature,
1. Tap All apps
2. Tap Messages
3. Tap Menu
4. Tap Settings
5. Tap General
6. Check the box for Delete old messages
7. If user would like to edit the limit, tap on Text message limit
and enter a new value.
8. Once done, press the Back key
twice to exit out of Messages settings.
