HTC One X/X+ – What's New and Different in Sense 5

Starting in January 2014, the update to Android 4.2.2/HTC Sense 5.0 will be available for the HTC One X and HTC One X+ on AT&T. With this update, there are some significant changes to the user experience. Use the guide below to understand the new changes:

HTC BlinkFeed Home Screen

After updating the device, an HTC BlinkFeed notification will appear in the notification bar. Tap on the notification to enable HTC BlinkFeed.

After enabling the BlinkFeed home screen style, the leftmost panel will display the HTC BlinkFeed home screen reader. Tap the blue Get Started boxes to set up the desired content sources.

Note: Enabling the BlinkFeed home screen style will reset the home screen shortcuts to the default set. The original home screen style is still saved on the device.



To turn off BlinkFeed and revert back to the original home screen style, go to Settings > Personalize > Home Screen Style and then select the Traditional option. This will restore the original home screen configuration.

Updated Lock Screen

The new lock screen no longer uses the lock ring to unlock the device. Now, there are three options available:

  • Swipe up the lock icon or background image to unlock to the last visible screen.
  • When available, swipe up on an app notification (such as music controls) to unlock directly to that app.
  • Drag up an icon from the launch bar to unlock the device directly to that application.

Updated Applications Tray

The following changes have been made to the applications tray:

  • Pages now scroll up and down instead of left and right.
  • Two grid sizes are now available: 3x4 and 4x5. This setting is available in the menu within the application tray.
  • The filter buttons at the bottom of the screen have been replaced by a drop down list at the top of the app list.
  • Folders are now supported within the application tray. These work similar to home screen folders, simply drag one icon over another while in the Custom list view (default).

Updated Notification Bar + Quick Settings

The Notification bar has been updated to give user quick access to many of the most popular settings. There are now two gestures you can use on the notification bar:

  • One-finger swipe down from the top of the screen displays the primary notification screen. Tap the tiles icon in the upper right to jump to quick settings.
  • Two-finger swipe down from the top of the screen displays the quick settings screen. Enable/disable the most common settings. Tap the list icon in the upper-right to switch to notifications.

Updated Camera Interface

The camera interface has been updated with a cleaner and easier to use interface. The same great features such as continuous shot and VideoPic are still featured on the device.

Camera AE/AF Lock

A new camera update allows you to lock the camera focus on a specific target within the viewfinder.



To perform this focus lock, press and hold on the desired target until AE and AF locked is displayed on the screen.

Updated Gallery Interface

The Gallery interface has been updated with an improved Events view; featuring automatically created highlight videos. Within the highlight videos, choose from an assortment of pre-configured themes with choreographed music and image transitions.

Updated Recent Apps List

The new recent apps list shows thumbnails for the 9 most recently accessed apps. Simply tap the desired app to return to it, swipe up on the thumbnail to close it.

Battery Percentage Notification

A new notification is available that shows the specific battery percentage. To enable this notification, go to Settings > Battery Manager, and then check Show battery level.

Note: The name for the Battery Manager setting was named Power in previous software versions.

Daydream

Daydream is a new interactive screensaver mode developed by Google Android devices. To enable Daydream, to to Settings > Display, gestures & buttons and then select Daydream.



Note: Additional Daydream screensavers are available from third party developers.
