Hardware Requirements

• 1 GHz or higher processor clock speed recommended
• 512 MB of RAM or higher recommended
• 50 MB of available free hard disk space
• 1 USB Cable 2.0 is required

If your system does not meet the above requirements or you are using Windows 7 or MAC operating system, please contact Rogers at 1-888-ROGERS-1, when prompted say “Wireless” and then “Technical Support”


Before you Begin

1. Allocate approximately 20 to 30 minutes
2. Disable Standby/Sleep Mode on your PC
3. Ensure that your Magic has a battery level of at least 50%
4. Make sure your laptop is connected to the power source or battery is at least 75% charged
5. Backup your personal data: All personal data (contacts, applications, photos, bookmarks, etc) stored on the device will be lost after the update process. There are also 3rd party applications on Android Market place to back up your applications and personal data.
6. Do not interrupt the ROM software update process
7. Turn off Debugging
   • Press Menu
   • Select Settings
   • Select Applications
   • Select Development
   • Uncheck USB debugging

DOWNLOADING THE SOFTWARE

1. Download the following software and save it to your PC.
   • HTC Sync
   • HTC Magic ROM Update Utility (RUU) (Accessed by entering a valid Rogers Magic SN number below)

INSTALLING HTC SYNC

1. Navigate to the folder where you unzip the HTC Sync
2. Double Click on the Install.exe file to install it to your PC
   • (Close all running programs and temporarily exit your anti-virus program when you install the HTC Sync)
3. Follow the prompts to complete the installation
   • Select your language and press Ok
   • Click Next to continue
   • Read the license agreement, select I accept the terms of the license agreement and press Next
   • Click Next to accept the default installation and press Next
   • Click Install to begin the installation
   • The wizard will take a few minutes to install software. Click Finish to complete

UPDATING THE MAGIC SOFTWARE
IMPORTANT NOTE:
All personal data (contacts, applications, photos, bookmarks, etc) will be deleted from the device during the update process. There are also 3rd party applications on Android Market place to back up your applications and personal data.

1. From your PC, launch HTC Sync
2. Connect your Magic device to your PC using the USB cable (if the phone is not connected to the PC there will be a sync failure)
3. On your phone, check Notifications on the status bar for the icon to confirm if HTC Sync recognizes the phone
4. On your PC, navigate to the folder where you saved the ROM Update Utility (RUU)
5. Double Click on the Install.exe file
6. On the Welcome Screen, read the message in the dialog box, check the acknowledgement box and then click Next to begin the ROM software update installation
   
7. On the next screen, read and complete the steps shown in the dialog box first and the select Next.
   
8. The following message will then be displayed, indicating that the utility is verifying and acquiring information about the device in preparation for the update process. Wait for this verification process to finish.
   
9. Information about the device, such as the current Image version will then be displayed. Click Update to proceed.
   
10. Below the device information, information about the new ROM software update will be displayed. Click Next to proceed.
    
11. A confirmation message will appear and will show the length of time it will take to copy the necessary files (including the radio image) to the device. Click Next to begin the update.
    
12. A progress bar will run through the screen during the update process. In the middle of the ROM software update process, the progress bar may stop running. This is normal, as the RUU is adjusting itself to complete the update process automatically.
    
13. When you see the screen below, the update is complete. Click Finish to exit the utility.
    
14. Your device will reboot. This will take a few minutes. Once the reboot is complete (indicated by displaying the Home screen), you can then configure your device for use.

3. Installation Instructions
1. Click Download below to download “HTCSync2.0.8.zip” to your PC.
2. Unzip “HTCSync2.0.8.zip” and run “HTCSync2.0.8.exe” to install it to your PC. (Suggestion: Please close all running programs and temporarily exit your anti-virus program when you install the HTC Sync)
3. From your PC, launch HTC Sync, and use the USB cable to connect your phone to the PC (if the phone is not connected to the PC there will be a sync failure).
4. On your phone, check Notifications on the status bar for the icon to confirm if HTC Sync recognizes the phone.
5. The first time you synchronize the phone, the Synchronization Settings Wizard will start automatically to help you set up HTC Sync. (If the Synchronization Settings Wizard does not start, click Synchronize Now on the HTC Sync screen.)
After the first time, to start syncing your phone to your computer, pull down the notifications bar on the phone and tap “Synchronize your phone with Windows” to connect to the PC
6. On your PC, Follow the instructions to finish the wizard on the HTC Sync screen.

* The installation process can take several minutes. It is recommended that you close all programs on your PC prior to starting the installation program and do not open any applications or files while the installation is in process.

Why is updating the software on your device recommended? 

The ROM software update posted below provides several key enhancements for your HTC Magic:

-Improves the overall device functionality and stability

-Enables correct SMS timestamp

-Enables Chinese character display for POP3 HTML Emails

-Corrects E-mail client exchange Issues

Please read the following important notes before starting the ROM software update: 

Before you proceed, please confirm that this software update is a newer version than what is currently loaded on your device: To determine what version is running on your device, go to Menu > Settings > About phone > and scroll down to Build Number. Then, refer to the image on the right and note the Build Number version listed. If you have the same Build Number version and your device is operating normally, there is no need to reload this software. 

Do not interrupt the ROM software update process:  The update can take up to 10 minutes to complete.  During the update process, do not attempt to make/receive calls, press any buttons on your device or disconnect the device from the USB cable as this will stop the update and your device will be rendered inoperable.  Close all running applications on your computer before starting the update and do not open any applications or files while the update is in process.

Back up your personal data:  All personal data (contacts, applications, photos, bookmarks, etc) stored on the device will be lost after the update process.  Back up the data on your device by copying the data to an SD memory card. There are also 3rd party applications on Android Market place to back up your applications and personal data.

Ensure that you device has a battery level of at least 50%:  If the battery "dies" during the update process, there is a chance that it will not recover and will need to be sent for repairs.

Disable the “standby” and “hibernation” modes on your computer. 

Before you install the new ROM update on the device, be sure to install the HTC Sync software.

On your computer, run the ROM Update Utility (RUU) to install the ROM software update to your device. The next section provides a detailed procedure on how to install the ROM software Update).
