Opportunity:
HTC is looking for an Advanced Materials Specialist to research and evaluate new materials, new manufacturing and finishing processes for next-generation mobile devices. The role of the Materials Specialist is to explore new hardware materials solutions and processing technologies to enable further innovation for HTC’s products. The ideal candidate would have an extensive understanding and background in materials and material processing techniques with an emphasis on new innovative concepts.
The role also involves identifying and leading specific development programs in partnership with new and existing manufacturing suppliers, collaborating with HTC’s industrial design, engineering, manufacturing and operations teams and applying resources where needed to ensure success. The qualified candidate will have strong engineering skills in addition to excellent leadership and organizational abilities. The candidate should be self-driven, creative, have strong communication skills and be able to work under minimal supervision.
Job responsibilities:
- Discover and evaluate new materials, concepts, coatings and finishes.
- Investigate and develop new processing technologies and secondary operations.
- Project management leadership for multiple new material and processing technology development programs.
- Interface with engineering and creative design teams to understand current and future technical requirements along with performance characteristics.
- Cross-functional engagement with mechanical engineering, supply chain, product testing and other global HTC development teams.
- Work with the product planning team to align product features with technology roadmaps.
- Identify and translate solutions used in other industries to HTC mobile devices.
- Drive suppliers to invest resources and support HTC R&D activities.
- Manage initial assessment of estimated production part costs, required investments, supply chain options and capacity assumptions.
The successful candidate will have:
- Experience with the consumer electronics engineering development and qualification process.
- Experience working effectively with creative industrial design and cmf teams.
- Strong project management skills, experience developing evaluation and test plans, building teams, managing schedules, budgets and owning resolution of issues and risks.
- Proven track record of developing innovative material and processing technology solutions.
- Experience developing new suppliers and supply chain solutions.
- Experience with a wide range of metal and plastic manufacturing processes.
- Advanced understanding of decorative finish technologies (including plating, painting, anodizing, in-mold decoration, printing etc).
- Ability to quickly assess initial cost and risks associated with new technologies.
- Advanced problem solving and analysis skills.
- Exceptional collaboration and negotiating skills.
- Communication skill and the ability to efficiently work in a multi-cultural team.
- Excellent verbal, presentation and written communication skills.
Experience/Education
- BSc/MSc in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or Material Science.
- 10-15 years of professional work experience in consumer products industry.
- Product design, manufacturing, technology development, materials and finishes experience.
- Design and processing experience with plastics and injection molding.
- Design and processing experience with metals, metal stamping, die casting, machining.
- Experience with finishing and decoration processes including painting, IMD/IML, PVD, CVD, anodizing.
- Demonstrated top tier performance at all levels of academic and professional career stages.
- Proven track record of delivering results.
- International/domestic travel 25%.
